Programme Notes...

Brass instrumentation is quite often associated with militaristic and patriotic music. The conception for my fanfare was to pay tribute to a facet within society who often does not get saluted in such a way. Those peaceful, anonymous, independent thinkers who are not invited to the parade should also be saluted.

Fanfare for the Uncommon Man is somewhat of a mocking piece. It features characteristic triumphant march rhythms but is countered with harsh, "sour" tones. The intensity of a traditional fanfare is lost in the middle phrases as the piece explores more sensitive musical material before returning with a "bang" ending, saluting those that need to be saluted!
