Three Very Distinct Pieces for Brass Trio

Three Very Distinct Pieces for Brass Trio (1994-96) - trumpet, french horn, and tuba

Programme Notes

This trio of pieces (for trio) actually started off as just one piece; a composition assignment while at the University of Toronto. I so enjoyed working with the sonorities that I produced in the quite rhythmic and polytonal 1st piece that I decided to expand the assignment to include two more contrasting pieces.

The second piece was inspired by the warm tone colours produced by Salvation Army brass ensembles that one would hear in shopping plazas at Christmas. The third piece explores many textures and moods - from a sparse and quiet start to an intense and rhythmic end, and everything in between. Having the instruments explore extreme registers and "converse" with each other were also important objectives in exposing a wide array of possibilities of these 3 great instruments.
